Walking around Sighisoara Citadel - 2011
Sighisoara (See ghee swahr' ah) Citadel is a 12th Century Saxon fortress and is the historic center of the city and still inhabited. It is one of seven Saxon walled citadels in Transylvania.
We started walking along the scenic walkway at the base of the citadel wall, with the City Hall towering above and the modern Sighisaora in the valley below.
An opening in the wall lead us to the Shoemakers' Tower (top pin on the map), one of the 9 towers left from the 14 towers built. Each tower was built by one of the guilds (association of craftsmen in a particular trade) and bears the name of the guild.
